# CLI Implementation Plan Summary
## Important Testing and Execution Instructions
### Testing Requirements (ALL PHASES)
- **Use pytest CLI directly**: `pytest tests/cmd/test_*.py -v > test_output.log 2>&1`
- **DO NOT use VS Code integrated test terminal** (it may hang)
- **Always save output to log files** and inspect them afterward
- **Example**: `pytest tests/cmd/test_cli_structure.py -v > test_output.log 2>&1`
### CLI Execution Requirements (ALL PHASES)
- **Use `uv run` to execute CLI**: `uv run gnmibuddy.py --help > cli_output.log 2>&1`
- **Always save output to log files** and inspect them afterward
- **Never rely on terminal output directly** (it may get cut off)
- **Example**: `uv run gnmibuddy.py device info --device R1 > command_test.log 2>&1`
### Verification Process
1. Run tests and save to log: `pytest tests/cmd/ -v > test_results.log 2>&1`
2. Test CLI functionality: `uv run gnmibuddy.py --help > cli_help.log 2>&1`
3. Inspect log files to verify everything works correctly
4. Check for errors or unexpected output in the log files
## Quick Reference Guide
### Phase 1: Foundation and Command Structure Refactoring
**Goal:** Transform flat CLI to hierarchical structure with command groups
**Key Tasks:**
- Enhance BaseCommand class with `group` and `aliases` attributes
- Group commands: device, network, topology, ops, manage
- Ensure kebab-case naming convention
- Create CLI structure tests
**LLM Agent Prompt:** Copy from CLI_IMPLEMENTATION_PLAN.md "Phase 1 Agent Prompt"
### Phase 2: Help System Enhancement and User Experience
**Goal:** Create intuitive help system with progressive disclosure
**Key Tasks:**
- Implement grouped help display
- Remove banner from subcommand help
- Add usage examples to all commands
- Implement command aliases (d, n, t, o, m)
- Create "Did you mean?" error handling
**LLM Agent Prompt:** Copy from CLI_IMPLEMENTATION_PLAN.md "Phase 2 Agent Prompt"
### Phase 3: Testing Infrastructure for CLI Design Compliance
**Goal:** Ensure CLI follows design patterns and maintains quality
**Key Tasks:**
- Create CLI design compliance tests
- Implement help system consistency tests
- Add command structure validation
- Enforce naming conventions through tests
- Create future-proofing tests
**LLM Agent Prompt:** Copy from CLI_IMPLEMENTATION_PLAN.md "Phase 3 Agent Prompt"
### Phase 4: Advanced Features and Final Polish
**Goal:** Add modern CLI capabilities and final polish
**Key Tasks:**
- Implement output formatting (json, table, yaml)
- Add enhanced version information
- Create shell completion scripts
- Add batch operations support
- Final optimization and polish
**LLM Agent Prompt:** Copy from CLI_IMPLEMENTATION_PLAN.md "Phase 4 Agent Prompt"
## Command Structure Transformation
### Current Structure (Flat)
```
gnmibuddy routing --device R1
gnmibuddy interface --device R1
gnmibuddy deviceprofile --device R1
gnmibuddy topology-neighbors --device R1
```
### Target Structure (Hierarchical)
```
gnmibuddy device info --device R1
gnmibuddy device profile --device R1
gnmibuddy device list
gnmibuddy network routing --device R1
gnmibuddy network interface --device R1
gnmibuddy topology neighbors --device R1
gnmibuddy ops logs --device R1
gnmibuddy manage log-level show
```
## Testing Strategy
### CLI Design Compliance Tests
- **Structure Tests:** Verify command hierarchy and registration
- **Naming Tests:** Enforce kebab-case and consistent patterns
- **Help Tests:** Verify help output format and examples
- **UX Tests:** Test error messages and aliases
- **Regression Tests:** Ensure backward compatibility
### Key Test Files to Create
- `tests/cmd/test_cli_design_compliance.py`
- `tests/cmd/test_help_consistency.py`
- `tests/cmd/test_command_structure.py`
- `tests/cmd/test_naming_conventions.py`
- `tests/cmd/test_cli_best_practices.py`

## Quick Start Instructions
1. **Phase 1:** Copy Phase 1 Agent Prompt and run with LLM
- Test with: `pytest tests/cmd/test_cli_structure.py -v > test_output.log 2>&1`
- Verify with: `uv run gnmibuddy.py --help > cli_output.log 2>&1`
2. **Phase 2:** After Phase 1 completion, copy Phase 2 Agent Prompt
- Test with: `pytest tests/cmd/test_help_system.py -v > test_output.log 2>&1`
- Verify with: `uv run gnmibuddy.py device --help > device_help.log 2>&1`
3. **Phase 3:** After Phase 2 completion, copy Phase 3 Agent Prompt
- Test with: `pytest tests/cmd/ -v > test_output.log 2>&1`
- Verify with: `uv run gnmibuddy.py --help > final_check.log 2>&1`
4. **Phase 4:** After Phase 3 completion, copy Phase 4 Agent Prompt
- Test with: `pytest tests/cmd/test_advanced_features.py -v > test_output.log 2>&1`
- Verify with: `uv run gnmibuddy.py --version > version_check.log 2>&1`
**Remember**: Always inspect the log files to verify everything works correctly!## Key Files to Monitor
